This year’s Asia-Pacific conference theme was ‘ Aramai Tii ’ (meaning ‘the spirit of togetherness’) and delegates were encouraged to embrace the region’s different cultures while working on a number of social and sustainability projects. The conference also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the JCI movement and included an additional alumni programme. Challenges As a non-profit organisation, regional conferences are organised by volunteers and local chapter members in the chosen destination. In Sabah, where business events are largely focused on the domestic market, JCI members on the organising committee lacked experience in managing international delegates’ needs, such as the need for real-time translation. JCI regional managers and presidents made several visits to Kota Kinabalu in the lead-up to work with local members and offer support, while JCI Kuala Lumpur assisted in providing simultaneous translation booths. Sabah Tourism Board worked closely with JCI to coordinate visa approvals and provide delegates with pre-clearance through immigration. The MERS outbreak in South Korea also impacted delegate numbers and led to the cancellation of a South Korea-inspired social event. Execution Sutera Harbour Resort was used as the conference headquarters where the three-day trade show took place along with multiple workshops and training seminars, General Assembly meetings, the 100th Anniversary Forum, and a Hope Forum, dedicated to JCI’s Operation Hope. July 23 to 25, New York City, United States

“Youth should be given a chance to take an active part in the decision-making of local, national and global levels.”
-United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Leading Global Collaboration: The Role of Young Active Citizens

The world we live in today is constantly evolving. Traditional solutions to global challenges are no longer sufficient. Young active citizens seize this opportunity to take local action to achieve sustainable impact. Uniting citizens from the government, business and civil sectors allows us to expand our ability to create impact for a better world. At the 2014 JCI Global Partnership Summit, JCI delegates and partners will gather to discuss the most pressing challenges of our time. As we approach the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals, JCI members continue their grassroots work to advance these global challenges. They conduct needs-based, action-oriented projects focused on health and wellness, education and economic empowerment and sustainability. The time is now to change the conversation toward the future. The youth of today engaged in all sectors of society play an important role in the development of the post 2015 global agenda.

What needs do you see in your community?

What priorities matter to you in the post 2015 global development agenda based on these needs?

How can we unite all sectors of society to expand our ability to create sustainable impact?

Join us in New York City to continue the exciting discussion of our world in 2015 and beyond.

The Summit will focus on providing young active citizens with the tools and information necessary to impact their communities through targeted action and strategic partnerships.

Expected Results
The Summit aims to accomplish the following

  • Engage thought leaders from the three sectors of society to explore best practices in collaboration, leading the conversation with the unique JCI perspective.
  • Highlight strategic partnerships and how they can be implemented at the local level using the three stages of community development to advance the current MDG agenda.
  • Showcase outstanding projects aligned with the JCI Active Citizen Framework from around the world to motivate and inspire active citizens to create sustainable impact.
  • Activate and engage young people to participate in the post-2015 global development process.

From November 4-9, more than 3,000 delegates from 104 countries united in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to celebrate local and global impact and make important decisions about the future of JCI.

During their dynamic week in Rio de Janeiro, World Congress delegates participated in exciting events including the JCI Morning Shows, Spotlight JCI, the JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop, the first ever JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) Workshop: Collaborating for Impact and a wide variety of workshops and forums with inspiring guest speakers. This year, the new JCI Awards Ceremony featuring the 2013 JCI TOYP Honorees proved to be a great success celebrating positive change all together on one dazzling evening.

Delegates also made significant decisions about the future of JCI at this year’s highly anticipated General Assemblies. Each Congress attendee had the exciting responsibility to make some strong decisions about the future of JCI. One of these major decisions was the approval of the 2014-2018 JCI Strategic Plan. After its approval, delegates, partners and friends also participated in the JCI Strategic Planning Forum. There they discussed goals and actions steps for each of the five strategies, Impact, Motivate, Invest, Collaborate and Connect and learned more about how to implement these strategies on the local level. The event culminated in the adoption of the 2014 JCI Plan of Action, the election of the 2014 JCI Board of Directors under the leadership of 2014 JCI President- elect Shine Bhaskaran and the official handover of the role of JCI Secretary General from current Secretary General Edson A. Kodama of JCI Brazil to incoming Secretary General Dennis Cunanan of JCI Philippines. JCI members and friends left the World Congress with a renewed motivation for creating sustainable impact as JCI launches into a better, brighter future.
