This year’s Asia-Pacific conference theme was ‘ Aramai Tii ’ (meaning ‘the spirit of togetherness’) and delegates were encouraged to embrace the region’s different cultures while working on a number of social and sustainability projects. The conference also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the JCI movement and included an additional alumni programme. Challenges As a non-profit organisation, regional conferences are organised by volunteers and local chapter members in the chosen destination. In Sabah, where business events are largely focused on the domestic market, JCI members on the organising committee lacked experience in managing international delegates’ needs, such as the need for real-time translation. JCI regional managers and presidents made several visits to Kota Kinabalu in the lead-up to work with local members and offer support, while JCI Kuala Lumpur assisted in providing simultaneous translation booths. Sabah Tourism Board worked closely with JCI to coordinate visa approvals and provide delegates with pre-clearance through immigration. The MERS outbreak in South Korea also impacted delegate numbers and led to the cancellation of a South Korea-inspired social event. Execution Sutera Harbour Resort was used as the conference headquarters where the three-day trade show took place along with multiple workshops and training seminars, General Assembly meetings, the 100th Anniversary Forum, and a Hope Forum, dedicated to JCI’s Operation Hope.
